Chargers to induct 1963 championship team into Ring of Honor

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Chargers will induct their 1963 American Football League championship team into their Ring of Honor at halftime of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Qualcomm Stadium.

With a roster including future Pro Football Hall of Fame members Lance Alworth and Ron Mix, and coached by Hall of Famer Sid Gilman, the 1963 Chargers won the AFL's Western Division with a league-best 11-3 record, then defeated the then-Boston Patriots, 51-10, in the championship game at Balboa Stadium.

"I played on a championship team with Dallas and won the Super Bowl," said Alworth, a receiver selected by United Press International as the AFL's Player of the Year in 1963. "The '63 team I played on with the Chargers was the best football team I ever played on."

The 1963 Chargers "could do everything," Alworth said. They played together, the defense was "fabulous" and the running game led by Paul Lowe and Keith Lincoln was "unbelievable," he said.

All fans purchasing copies of the game program will receive a commemorative team photo and collage of the 1963 AFL Championship Team.
