ALPINE (CBS 8/CNS) - A rude awakening for residents of an Alpine apartment complex Tuesday, as a carport structure collapsed on top of several vehicles Tuesday.

Deputies were called to the complex at 2055 Arnold Way at 6:47 a.m., according to a San Diego County Sheriff's Department dispatcher. Once there, they learned several cars, pickups and SUVs were stuck under the debris, but no one was inside any of the vehicles, she said. There were no injuries reported.

Motorist Bernard Berry told CBS News 8 that he is to blame for the accident. He says he pulled to the side in his truck to let a car pass, but when he hit a speed bump his vehicle tipped to the side and hit the corner of the carport.

"Like dominoes, just the whole thing slid over. You could see the first car over here, it wasn't even under the carport. The whole thing just slid and came crashing down," Berry said.

The crash sent residents running to the carport to make sure no one was injured.

"It sounded like the garbage truck dropped a dumpster, only 10 times worse, like an explosion," neighbor Betty Shutts said.

Luckily, no one was inside the vehicles, and the neighborhood kids hadn't started playing yet.

"They always play here in the morning, always play here in the morning. Thank god they were still sleeping when it happened," neighbor Rosa Woodruff said.

The carport was not attached to the apartment complex, so there was no damage to the residential units.

A county building inspector visited the site Tuesday and says codes have changed a lot since the carport was originally built. He says a new one will be much sturdier, which should prevent a similar incident from happening again.
