Sewage spill closes dog beach in OB, south Mission Beach

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - For the second day in a row, people visiting either south Mission Beach or Ocean Beach were greeted by warning signs and an unmistakable smell.

"It's bad, it smells awful," one visitor said.

The 22,500-gallon spill was reported by the city's Metropolitan Wastewater Department Monday. Sewage entered the San Diego River near Interstate 15, leading to the

closures on each side of the mouth.

"We like to have two consecutive clean samples in order to lift the sample," Mark McPherson of the county Department of Environmental Services said.

So far, officials only have one.

Steven Scarvey took his dog Oreo to dog beach in OB Tuesday. Luckily he saw the postings, forcing him to be on high alert.

"(Oreo) was taking his ball to the water and I ran over and got it. I didn't want him to get wet, you know?" Scarvey said.

According to onlookers though, some visitors did not heed the warnings.

"There was a husky and a lab playing in the water and a person walking in the water," a visitor said.

"With the water contact closure, rinse them off as soon as possible, and give them a bath," McPherson said.
