MIRA MESA (CBS 8) - A firefighter escaped serious injury battling a Mira Mesa house fire, after falling through the roof of the burning structure.

The flames ignited shortly before 5:00 p.m. Tuesday in the 10,000 block of Zapata Avenue, and it took fire crews about 40 minutes to extinguish the flames and hot spots. The firefighter fell into the garage. He was treated on scene.

The American Red Cross helped eight adults and two children arrange for interim housing.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the damage is estimated at $300,000.

No injuries were reported.
