SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - San Diegans are starting to see a change as a shot of winter-like weather blows through the area. But before you fire up you heater, there are some things you should know.

With the cold days coming up, your furnace is going to be put through some heavy work. That's why SDG&E says you should have a professional look at it before firing it up.

There's a lot of work involved to find out whether your furnace is spewing out the dangerous gas that is carbon monoxide. Moises Vasquez with SDG&E is showing some of the things his professionals look for when performing free appliance checks for their customers.

Once he puts it out himself look at the smoke head *up* the vent - that means the furnace is venting properly and safely.

SDG&E recommends checking you air filter once a month. Also, keep the furnace unobstructed and clear from any objects that could catch fire. SDG&E's biggest recommendation is that you leave the big jobs to the professionals.

These appliance checks are very popular this time of year, so SDG&E says you can expect a professional to arrive at your home within two weeks.
