Wi-fido!: App monitors your pet from anywhere

Ever wonder what your pets are doing at home when you're at work, or on vacation? When you have a house sitter watching your pet do you wonder, does he even miss me?

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Ever wonder what your pets are doing at home when you're at work, or on vacation? When you have a house sitter watching your pet do you wonder, does he even miss me?

Now there's a brand new pet monitor that gives you access to your pets from your smartphone, tablet or computer 24/7, filled with extra features for Fido.

Cameras that monitor your pets have been around for years, but Motorola has designed a brand new pet monitor to stand heads and tails above the rest.

Casey Dean, publisher of San Diego Pets magazine, is testing out the new Motorola Scout1 wi-fi pet monitor, which allows him to talk to his dog Buddy, and his cat Noodles, even when he's not in the room. It's two-way audio, so you can hear your dog too.

"If you were just away and needed to calm your dog down because he's barking, that would be a really great feature to say, quiet, quiet," Dean said.

If you catch your pets doing something especially cute or funny, you can capture the moment in a photo or video.

"I tried that out first thing, I thought that was pretty neat. You can kind of set it up to watch what's going on, but if something funny is happening you can take a little picture," Dean said.

Scout 1 spokesperson Sandy Robins sets up her monitor everywhere app to send her a notification when noise is detected in her home in Orange County.

"I'm monitoring my cats 70 miles from here," she said. "I travel a lot and that's nice, when you want a fur fix, you can check in on your phone and get your fur fix on your phone."

You can monitor the temperature of the room, and if your pet seems anxious, a quick swipe can activate one of four lullabies.

Robins says it can be especially useful to monitor sick pets, and just plain old fun to watch your furry friends frolic.

"With puppies and young kittens, that's a great one to see what kind of destruction is happening, and then you know how to remedy it," she said.

The Scout1 has only been on the market for a few weeks, and it's being sold only at Petsmart right now. The price, is $299, but you can get 20% off for a limited time if you buy it online.
