World War II-era fighter aircraft added to USS Midway Museum

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - This is a very exciting day at the USS Midway Museum.

A rare World War II aircraft is being added to the flight deck. The F4F Wildcat helped win the Battle of the Midway in 1942.

The USS Midway's historian says this Wildcat was pulled out of Lake Michigan in Chicago in the 90s before it was brought to North Island.

After three years of intensive restoration work done by Midway volunteers, this rare artifact was trucked over from North Island on Thursday morning. The several-ton aircraft's body was lifted up to the flight deck about 25 feet, where the wings will be put on and it will be prepared for display.

It will be part of a 3D theater exhibit called "Battle of Midway Experience" that will be ready for public viewing in the coming months.

You can see this unique, historic Wildcat right now aboard the USS Midway Meuseum, but it might be a good idea to come before the new year. Come January, the ticket prices to get on board will go up.
