Family frantic to find missing Chula Vista doctor

Posted: Updated:

CHULA VISTA (CBVS 8) - A family is desperately pleading for help to find their missing loved one. Hugues Bellvue, a Haitian-American doctor, hasn't been seen in weeks.

He runs a medical center in Tijuana and was reportedly supposed to be in New York when he disappeared last month.

Bellevue is beloved by his family, who has been trying to find him for three weeks.

"He's not answering the calls, he's not contacting any of the family members," Bellevue's sister said.

The 59-year-old oncologist was last seen by his 23-year-old son at their house on McCloud River Road on November 12 in Chula Vista. During that week, his sister says they spoke about his plans to attend an upcoming ceremony in his honor in New York on November 23.

"He was on his way to New York, not only to receive an award for the work he was doing, but also for the orphanage that he had started in Haiti helping children," his sister said.

Relatives say Bellvue was very generous toward Haitian organizations, all while operating a hospital in Playas de Tijuana. Outside of the hospital, Bellevue was also known to treat his own family members, who have now gone weeks without his care.

Bellevue's sister and aunt have hired private investigator Bill Garcia to help authorities in Chula Vista and Mexico. Garcia says his initial concern is with how Bellevue's estranged ex-wife may have kept his disappearance from his relatives.

"She knew he was missing prior to the family making note of that," Garcia told CBS News 8.

According to his family, a doctor at Bellevue's Saint Marc Hospital was kidnapped over the summer and held against his will until a Tijuana gang was paid $15,000. Fears are mounting that Bellevue has become a victim of a ransom kidnapping, although neither the family or authorities are aware of any ransom demanded for Bellevue.

Family members arrived in Chula Vista shortly after the initial police report was filed by the ex-wife on November 22. Since then their desperation has only grown.

"We are just pleading, please, and he's a man of god. Give us a chance with him," his sister said.
