SWAT team rescues woman from knife-wielding man

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - An agitated, butcher knife-wielding man took a woman captive in a Stockton-area home Thursday, prompting a SWAT standoff that ended with his arrest about two hours later.

"He had the female in front of him with his arm around her neck holding a knife to her," said SDPD Lt. Paul Rorrison.

The standoff, in the 100 block of 30th Street, began with a domestic disturbance call about 5 p.m., according to San Diego police.

"This subject continued to drink from a bottle of alcohol and kept threatening both the officers and the female with a butcher knife," said Rorrison.

The Special Weapons and Tactics team was called in at about 5:15 p.m. They subdued the suspect with rounds from a bean bag gun.

"At one point the female and the subject inside started fighting over the knife. He pushed her in the face. At that point, a decision was made that we need to do an emergency deployment and make entry into the residence," said Rorrison.

Shortly before 6 p.m., the personnel forced their way into the house, hauled the suspect out onto the street, and handcuffed him.

"They showed a considerable amount of restraint and didn't use lethal force on this subject, even though they could have," said Rorrison.

No serious injuries were reported.
