Ex-San Diego teacher gets 7 years for child porn

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A retired teacher who worked in San Diego schools for 34 years will spend seven years in federal prison for child pornography.

James Rick Mitchell was sentenced Friday and will surrender to authorities next month.

U.S. Attorney spokeswoman Kelly Thornton says the 67-year-old Mitchell collected nearly 1 million photos and videos of minors engaged in sexual acts.

He was identified as a suspect by the U.S. Postal Service during a larger investigation into a commercial distributor of child pornography.

Thornton says Mitchell spent $4,300 between 2006 and 2011 to buy the images.

Between 1969 and 2003, Mitchell worked at Einstein Junior High School, Point Loma High School and University City High School.

He taught math and physical education, coached track and counseled students.

A phone listing for Mitchell was disconnected.
