Old Town shooting suspects on the loose

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The search is on for the suspects who opened fire on a van in Old Town early this morning.

It happened around 3:15 a.m. outside a gas station at the corner of Old Town Avenue and Moore Street.

The crashed car, the bullet holes, police say this early morning scene was caused by an argument that escalated out of control.

"The victim was across the street at the gas station getting gas, had some kind of argument with a couple males form this gas station," San Diego police Sgt. William Pettus said.

The suspects then drove up next to the victims on Moore Street and opened fire.

"When our officer arrived he found the vehicle you see here across the street crashed through the fence. Numerous bullet holes in the windshield," Sgt. Pettus said.

No one was hit and officers say the car got to where they found it when the victims tried to get away.

"The victim was in his van, puts it in reverse, takes off quickly, backs it into the pole, goes to take off forward, somehow crashes into the fence and ends up above the freeway," Sgt. Pettus said.

The two in the car were boyfriend and girlfriend and although they made it out unscathed. There was a fatality overnight, in a separate incident nearby.

"While the officer was contacting the victims in the vehicle, he noticed a pedestrian trying to run across the freeway, and got struck...from what we can tell interviewing witnesses, it appears to be a coincidence that the person in the freeway is not related to the shooting," Sgt. Pettus said.

As for the shooting, it's not clear how the argument started, but it doesn't appear as if the suspects and victims knew each other.

"From what witnesses are saying and the victims are saying this is random at this point. No gang connection, no drug connection, at this point," Sgt. Pettus said. "Victim is very fortunate that he and his girlfriend were not hit."
