County-wide warrant sweep nets scores of fugitives

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - A two-day multi-agency warrant sweep across the San Diego area culminated Thursday with scores of criminal suspects in custody and tens of thousands of dollars worth of illegal drugs and other contraband impounded, authorities said.

The crackdown focused on "high risk" fugitives, including those wanted for gang offenses, weapon charges, sex crimes, armed robbery and homicide, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

"The operation also led to the successful arrest of felons wanted in San Diego but located in other states," USMS spokesman Errol Watson said.

More than 200 law enforcement officers from 23 federal, state, and local agencies took part in the effort, dubbed "Operation Free-Bird."

Among the results were:

-- 102 felony arrests;

-- Two marijuana grow houses uncovered and dismantled;

-- Drugs with a combined street value of over $70,000 seized; and

-- More than $13,000 in confiscated currency, along with five guns, a number of stolen cars, ballistic vests and other law enforcement gear.

This operation not only led to the arrests of nearly 90 fugitives in San Diego County, but also helped to track down and take into custody several other wanted criminals located in other states as well.
