National guardsman comes home early to surprise kids

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Three children were given the number one gift on their Christmas list -- their dad home for the holidays.

Staff Sergeant Adan Mancilla is a national guardsman who just returned from Afghanistan.

The San Diego Zoo arranged the welcome-home surprise during one of its animal shows and brought the children onstage.

"I couldn't think of anything other, or special, or a more special way to surprise them at the zoo. A place that they love, that they related to, good family fun," Mancilla said.

The kids had no idea their dad was going to be home, and hadn't seen him in almost a year.
