Apartment fire displaces 2 adults, 6 children

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A fire that erupted in a detached garage in City Heights Monday spread to an adjacent home and apartment complex, racking up an estimated $200,000 worth of damage and leaving eight people in need of emergency lodging.

The non-injury blaze in the 4300 block of Copeland Avenue erupted shortly before 7 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

It took crews about a half-hour to subdue the flames, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the displaced residents -- two adults and six children, all from the apartment building -- arrange for interim housing.

The monetary losses were set at $100,000 to the structures and the same amount to destroyed contents, Luque said.

Investigators were unable to pin down the cause of the fire, though they suspected it might have been caused by a smoldering cigarette, Luque said.
