Daring escape after man breaks into apartment

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A family escapes through a back window after a man broke into their Clairemont apartment, and barricaded himself inside.

It happened at a complex in the 5800 block of Mount Alifan Drive.

A woman inside the apartment with her two young children told police the man started pounding on her door then forced himself in.

He said he had a gun and people were chasing him, then pushed furniture against the front door.

"It appears that he is extremely intoxicated with some type of controlled substance. We don't know who he is at this time. He hasn't given us his name." SDPD Lt. Paul Rorrison said.

The mother and her children hid in a back bedroom where police were able to pop out a window and get them out safely.

The man was carrying a large butcher knife when he surrendered to authorities.
