Man dies after car plunges off I-8 in Alpine

ALPINE (CBS 8) - A valiant effort for emergency crews in East County who rescued two Good Samaritans trying to save a man whose car went into a steep ravine.

"Part of the complexity of this is that it is night time and the terrain. So we were able to utilize helicopters so we could rule out or try to rule out the presence of any other persons down there," said CHP Sgt. Jim McNamara.

Emergency crews and California Highway Patrol were called to the viewpoint rest stop a half mile east of East Willows Road on Interstate 8 near Alpine at about 5 p.m. where they found a man pinned in a car 700 feet deep in a ravine.

Witnesses told officers they believe two people were in the car that went over the edge but eventually they found one and suspect the man pinned in the car took his own life.

Crews rescued the Good Samaritans who climbed 700 feet down the cliff to help the man.

"They are fatigued and assuming emotionally distraught as well," said McNamara.

CHP opened the rest stop. It's unclear when the car will be towed from the ravine.

The medical examiner arrived on scene and will determine the man's cause of death. Once the victim has been identified and family notified, his identity will be released.
