SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Many families will be traveling this holiday and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department wants you to have peace of mind that your home is secure.

It is offering free home checks when you are away on vacation.

If you are heading out of town, the senior volunteers with the sheriff's department will do home vacation checks if requested.

A senior volunteer will check your home regularly while you are away on vacation, providing you with peace of mind knowing that your home is being checked by trained personnel.

Meantime, state law enforcement agencies say DUI arrests are down statewide compared to 2012. The sheriff's department is focused on continuing that trend by increasing DUI patrols and checkpoints to protect the public from drunk drivers.

Driving under the influence isn't just dangerous, it's expensive. The average cost of a DUI arrest is more than $15,000 -- so this holiday season, don't drink and drive. It's just not worth it.
