ESCONDIDO (CNS) - A woman walking in the middle of a road was struck and killed by a motorist, a California Highway Patrol officer said Wednesday.
The fatal accident occurred at about 9 p.m. Tuesday on Lake Wohlford Road just outside of the Escondido city limits and north of Oakvale, said CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt.
"A 67-year-old male from Escondido was driving his 2010 Toyota Yaris southbound on Lake Wohlford Road just north of Oakvale. He observed someone walking in the middle of the road and attempted to swerve to the left but could not prior to striking the pedestrian with the right front of his vehicle," Bettencourt said. "The pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene and the driver of the vehicle was not injured."
A few minutes before the fatal crash, a witness called 911 to report a woman walking in the roadway, the officer said.
The woman's name has not been released pending notification of relatives, Bettencourt said. He did not expect the driver to face charges.
The City Council is scheduled Wednesday to take the first step in calling for residents to conserve water on a voluntary basis following the third straight winter with below-average rainfall.
