Dogs taken to shelter after rescue from freeway crash

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Two lucky people -- and two lucky dogs -- survived a fiery rollover crash with only minor injuries.

All four were thrown from the SUV when it overturned and burst into flames on Interstate 15 Wednesday.

An ambulance took the people to the hospital, but it was up to animal control officers to round up the dogs that were running loose on the freeway.

"It's a nice Christmas miracle that these dogs came out of this ordeal basically unscathed and we were available to respond immediately and capture them and keep them safe," Daniel DeSousa of the County Department of Animal Services said.

The dogs were taken to the animal shelter in Carlsbad, where they will be reunited with their owners.
