SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A bayfront home is gutted -- after a 2-alarm fire ripped through the second floor of a Mission Beach duplex.

Firefighters say the fire started at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday in the 800 block of Kennebeck Court near Bayside Walk.

"I heard a loud explosion, the house shook, and car alarms went off. I came running out of the house and saw the glow in the sky," said Johnny Bauer.

He witnessed flames shoot from the home and recorded video of the fire on his cell phone.

Officials with the San Diego Fire Department say several people were inside but safely escaped.

CBS News 8 was on the scene when a woman rescued a cockatoo from the home.

Southbound traffic on Mission boulevard opened around 10 p.m. and northbound traffic between Ventura Place and Kennebeck Court was still closed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
