Construction begins on Cabrillo Bridge at Balboa Park

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Getting in and out of Balboa Park just got trickier Thursday. For the next four months, the Cabrillo Bridge will be closed to cars, while pedestrians will still have access. The construction is all part of a plan to make the bridge safer.

The bridge is closed to traffic starting Thursday, January 2 and will not reopen to traffic until April 30.

The construction work being done is part of a multi-million dollar face lift to make the historic bridge safer. The $38 million retrofit and rehabilitation project will make the 770 foot bridge stronger in case of an earthquake and it will also preserve it for years to come.

Caltrans crews will repair the roadway, sidewalks and barriers and install fiber optic conduits as well as upgrade the drainage system.

The goal is to have the city-owned bridge ready well before the Balboa Park Centennial Celebration in 2015.

In the meantime, it will be business as usual in Balboa Park during construction. Although cars cannot drive across the bridge, pedestrians and bicyclists, walking their bikes, will continue to have access.
