SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Family and friends gathered Saturday to honor the memory of the McStay family.

Joseph and Summer McStay and their two children were remembered in a memorial service at a church in Laguna Niguel, followed by a paddle out at the San Clemente Pier.

Wearing flower leis and wetsuits -- those who knew the McStay family paddled out in their memory Saturday.

Instead of this being a somber moment, it was more of a celebration. At one point the group formed a circle and cheered.

"We're definitely celebrating because Joey knows and loves Jesus Christ and we're all Christians, we're all believers, and we know we are going to meet up with him again," Rodney Gabuya said.

Those who didn't get in the water, watched from the shore.

Summer's only brother Ken says this is exactly what she, Joey and their two boys would have wanted.

"It's definitely important for the family and this is something they loved to do...something we can remember them by," he said.

This beach ceremony followed one earlier held inside a Laguna Niguel church where mourners shared their fondest memories.

"It was very sad. We talked about how loving the family was," Lisa Sommers said.

The service comes just more than a month after the McStay's remains were found inside shallow graves in the Mojave Desert.

The family of four went missing from their Fallbrook home in February of 2010. Investigators have yet to name a suspect or make an arrest.

Something Joey's mom says has been the most difficult part of this ordeal.

"Its like a boulder on your stomach, you know, like on your heart. I need answers, because the pain will never go away," Susan Blake said.
