Suspect, passenger escape police after chase ends in South Bay

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A driver wanted on a felony arrest warrant sped off Tuesday when officers caught up with him on a South Bay street, fleeing recklessly for miles before crashing the truck he was driving and escaping on foot with a female passenger.

The roughly 20-minute road chase began in the 300 block of Del Mar Avenue in Chula Vista about 12:30 p.m., according to police.

The suspect led officers to the southern end of the city and then doubled back to the north, at times running stop signs, Lt. Kenny Heinz said. Around Telegraph Canyon Road and Interstate 805, the pursuing officers backed off for safety reasons.

A short time later, police found the Ford F-150 the fugitive had been driving abandoned in the 600 block of Douglas Street, where it had crashed into a cinder-block wall next to a home, Heinz said.

Officers searched the area with help from a sheriff's helicopter crew for about 40 minutes but were unable to locate the suspect or the passenger.
