Partnership to reduce homelessness along bayfront

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Port of San Diego and nonprofit Alpha Project are officially partners in the quest to reduce homelessness along the bayfront.

They signed the $50,000 contract Tuesday in a ceremony at Ruocco Park.

The Alpha Project will talk to the homeless living on port property to determine what services they need, and then match them with programs that will help them get off the streets.

"Homelessness is not a crime, it's a human condition. Providing people with access to the services that are already available is really the key," Harbor Police Chief John Bolduc said.

"It's a mutually beneficial outreach where we get to develop relationships with people. We have all the services that they possibly need," Alpha Project President Bob McElroy said.

Rates of homelessness in San Diego County have been steadily rising since 2010.
