SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors closed Wednesday's meeting in memory of longtime San Diego television journalist Loren Nancarrow, who died Dec. 28 at age 60 following an 11-month battle with brain cancer.
The Solana Beach resident's career spanned more than 30 years and included stints as a weatherman, anchor and a reporter on KGTV 10News, KFMB CBS 8 and, most recently, KSWB Fox 5.
"All of us had in some way, shape or form known Loren Nancarrow because he was a fixture on our local television news," Supervisor Ron Roberts said.
The five-time Emmy winner was also known as a conservationist and co-authored four organic gardening books.
Supervisor Dave Roberts, a former Solana Beach councilman and deputy mayor, said he first came in contact with Nancarrow through his passion for organic gardening.
"Mr. Nancarrow left an impression on everyone who crossed his path," he said.
Nancarrow was diagnosed with brain cancer last February, and later retired from his anchor position at Fox 5. He called himself a "Brain Cancer Warrior," and authored a blog about his cancer journey.
He is survived by his wife, Susie, and children, Graham, Hannah, and Britta.
"San Diego County and his family and friends are going to miss this great hero," Supervisor Dave Roberts said.
Several hundred people took part in a Dec. 30 memorial paddle-out and beach gathering at South Cardiff State Beach to celebrate Nancarrow's life.
Supervisor Dave Roberts said the family was working to complete "The Nancarrow Project," a healing garden planned for Scripps Cancer Center in La Jolla. A fundraiser for the effort is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 9, at the Belly Up Tavern at 143 S. Cedros Ave. in Solana Beach.
