Thousands of pounds of pot, meth seized off coast

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Thousands of pounds of pot and meth found floating off the coast have been intercepted and four people are in custody Wednesday, officials said.

It's the result of a joint operation between the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs.

It began Friday, when the Coast Guard discovered one panga boat about 170 miles off the coast of San Diego. Bad weather temporarily halted the search, which when resumed yielded the discovery of a second panga, along with about 3,500 pounds of marijuana and about 30 pounds of methamphetamine, according to U.S. Customs officials.

"Once everybody was in the general vicinity of the pangas, the interdiction took place, the marijuana was taken off the panga and picked up out of the water and was brought back here with four suspects," Bill Raymond of U.S. Customs said.

Officials also told CBS News 8 the discovery of methamphetamine was very unusual in this kind of situation.
