SeaWorld and city team up to promote reusable bags

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Interim Mayor Todd Gloria was at SeaWorld Wednesday, introducing a campaign to increase the use of reusable bags.

It's an effort to get San Diegans off of plastic bags, helping to maintain landfills, reduce costs to taxpayers, and perhaps most importantly, take care of our marine mammals.

"We do have Peanut here today, who's a sea turtle. He is of the age group that interprets plastic bags as being jellyfish. They consume the bags and unfortunately typically pass away," Gloria said.

SeaWorld is donating 25,000 to the city, hoping to get San Diegans used to them before the City Council votes on a proposed plastic bag ban later this year.
