Plea for justice for firefighter killed in crash

VISTA (CBS 8) - The family of a firefighter is calling for justice in connection to his death as a result of a head-on collision in October.

Thirty-seven-year-old Darin Steffey was killed on his motorcycle in East County on Oct. 3, 2013 on Buckman Springs Road north of Oak Drive.

"I felt like it isn't right he served this country, he served this state," said Steffey's girlfriend Jessica Raddatz.

On Tuesday, the driver accused of causing his death, Natasia Ray Woods, 21, will be in court for a preliminary hearing.

In the above video, CBS News 8's Abbie Alford spoke to Steffey's girlfriend who fears there will not be justice for the death of a man who was a veteran Airman, Laguna Interagency Hotshot member and a U.S. Forest Service firefighter.

"There is the possibility that she can walk away with this and it's just not OK," said Raddatz.

Public records show public defender Paul Rodriguez is representing Woods, but he would not confirm he was her attorney and told CBS News 8, "no comment."
