Secretary of the Navy in San Diego, outlines future

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's a proud day for the military.

The Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, is in town speaking about the current state of naval operations. An event was held at the Naval Mine and Anti-Submarine Warfare Center.

Mabus praised the military for swift action following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

"We had the George Washington Carrier Strike Group already at sea, ready to go wherever it was needed. And right after the storm came through, our Marines were there within a few hours helping to assess the damage, helping to plan how to do humanitarian assistance and disaster aid. They were there in Ospreys, they were there with C-130s. They began to bring in early help, and within just a few days we had more than a dozen ships in the waters around the Philippines," Mabus said.

Mabus is also outlining the goals and future of the Navy's fleet and sailors.
