Father Joe comes out of retirement to run charity

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – That didn't last long.

Father Joe Carroll announced Wednesday he's coming out of retirement, at least until donations are back on track.

On Wednesday, he gave a tour of Father Joe's Villages to visitors from the Diocese of San Diego, including Bishop Cirilo Flores. It's the first time the diocese has visited the charity since the village was founded in 1950.

Father Joe says he intends to step in to fill a void in leadership.

"I'm just a volunteer like anybody else. I just signed a letter today thanking somebody, I said, 'Retired… I thought,'" he joked.

Father Joe says donations are down and he'll do his best to turn that around.

Contact Father Joe's Villages if you can help.
