What's love got to do with it?

Posted: Updated:

I think I know what love is

At least, I thought I understood

Although I used to say "I love you,"

When what I meant, was that feels good.

I just stumbled though my young life

Thinking love was like a salve or ointment.

That would instantly take away all my pain

But I remained a portrait of a disappointment.

And we all have made our mistakes

Along that rocky road to bliss

Trying to make love connection

Ending up with a swing and a miss.

Now I knew my parents loved me

And that was not a ruse

But they split up when I was young

And as a kid, I was confused.

And when I first met my wife

Boy I remember that day well.

It wasn't exactly love I felt

But a four letter that begins with I.

And as we grew together

I was as shocked as I could be

How someone so kind and beautiful

Would want to spend her life with me.

See living with me is no picnic

I'm not always a lot of fun

Compared to guys who are romantic

I'm more like Attila the Hun.

Through the years, we've stayed together

Every morning, noon and night

Because I've learned those three little words

Honey you're right.

Now the closest I've ever known

To pure unadulterated love

Was the first time I held in my arms

That bundle from above.

And 21 years later

That love continues to grow

He's a handsome adult now

And it's hard to let him go.

The only sure thing in love

A love without any regret

Is the true worship and devotion

You can only get from the family pet.

So today, think about those who love you

And let them know just how you feel.

I'm still not sure what love is

But I know that love is real.
