Cement truck crashes, bursts into flames

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Some very tense moments on Interstate 15 early Saturday after a fully-loaded cement truck crashed and burst into flames.

The accident happened shortly after 6:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Mercy Road.

Investigators say the driver lost control of the truck after it blew a tire. It flipped on its side and a fuel leak led to the fire that quickly engulfed the truck.

The driver was able to escape without injury.

"Right side tire blew out and he swerved to the right and hit the wall at full speed and then it overturned...Caught fire...then proceeded northward because of the heavy weight," CHP Officer Alex Pereria said.

A hazmat team was called out mop up a diesel spill from the truck that started pouring into a storm drain. No cement spilled but it took several hours to remove the truck.
