Second San Diego meningitis death in one week

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - For the second time in a week, meningitis is being blamed for killing a San Diego resident.

A Lakeside woman died Monday, just days after complaining of flu-like symptoms.

Jackie Billings, 52, was taken off life support. Her husband took her to the hospital last Friday, and they left thinking everything was going to be okay.

"She had a breathing treatment, antibiotics... went home. We were sitting, chatting and she started feeling nauseous," Robert Billings said.

The couple returned to Sharp Memorial Hospital on Saturday, where Jackie was given medication and fell asleep. She never regained consciousness.

Her husband says he never got to say goodbye to his wife of 22 years, but if he had the chance, he knows exactly what he would have said.

"I love her and I miss her. I can't wait to be with her," he told CBS News 8.

A memorial has been set up inside the Santee Starbucks where she worked.

"It's overwhelming how much support I have. When something like this happens, we all band together," Robert said.

Jackie's death comes just a few days after meningitis took the life of Jewelean Pimentel, a freshman cheerleader at Patrick Henry High School. Doctors are still trying to figure out how she got the disease.

As for Robert, he believes his wife's death was brought on by her other ailments. Regardless, he's hoping others hear his story and are encouraged to take care of their health the moment they see a problem.

"Basically, it happened pretty fast," he said.

Robert also tells CBS News 8 that his wife's case of meningitis was not contagious. We are waiting to hear a confirmation on that from hospital staff.

The family is in the process of setting up a memorial fund. If you'd like to help, it will be in her name at Mission Federal Credit Union.
