The Lakehouse: The lake show

SAN MARCOS (CBS 8) - Many San Diegans may remember the quaint hotel on the edge of Lake San Marcos, former home of the Quails Inn, famous for its Sunday brunch. Well, witness the transformation to the tranquility at the Lakehouse.

"It's an upscale four-star resort, ranked top 25 in the country. But it was really important to us to be affordable," Dieter Schmitz said.

Muted tones blend into the surrounding hillside and shimmering lake, giving the entire resort the feel of a hidden gem.

"If you're just looking for a quick getaway, it's right on the lake. Beautiful, definitely economical as well," Dieter said.

Longtime San Diegans won't recognize the place.

"The funniest part is having people that stayed here before and are just blown away," Dieter said.

Two pool decks give both families and couples a chance to enjoy the resort at their own pace.

"We have this great fire pit, and every Saturday night, we do complimentary 'smores night," Dieter said.

Rooms in the lodge offer great overviews of the entire complex, but it's the one- and two-bedroom cottages that are the showstoppers.

"You have a specious kitchen, living room, amazing view, right on to the lake. Then you have your own personal outdoor fireplace," Dieter said. "These have been great for bachelor, bachelorette parties, families, couples."

Lakehouse guests are encouraged to venture out on the tranquil waters of Lake San Marcos. The Lakehouse even offers sunset champagne cruises of the two-mile lake.

"It's important for locals to be able to come stay here and feel like they are getting a value. It's something we'll always be committed to," Dieter said.

And for nostalgic locals, work is underway on the brand new Quails Inn, and the restaurant should be open by the end of the year.

"Our goal is you come here, you never have to leave," Dieter said.

It's a chance for San Diegans to be bedazzled again by one of the shimmering jewels of the North County.
