Firefighters get donation to buy emergency tools

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – San Diego firefighters are getting a big donation to make their jobs a little safer.

The money will provide more than 1,000 specialized tools that firefighters need during emergencies.

The San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation, a nonprofit organization, just donated $20,000 worth of cable cutters to the San Diego Fire Rescue Department. The foundation received the money from a very generous local family -- Gene and Judy Segal.

It doesn't look like much, but the cutters help save lives. The tool is simple, but can be crucial in helping firefighters cut and extricate themselves when trapped in life-threatening entanglement hazards. The wire cutters are also essential for vehicle accidents and other confined space rescues.

Before Thursday, the department didn't have it in the budget to purchase the cutters, and the firefighters would have to purchase them on their own. Now the department has one for every fire fighter in the City of San Diego.

If you've ever been stuck sitting in traffic, you've probably seen motorcyclists cutting through lanes and whizzing by. It's a move called lane-splitting, and while it's potentially dangerous, it's perfectly legal.
