BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A man who escaped from Montana police while being questioned about a reported sexual assault has been caught in Oregon.

The U.S. Marshals Oregon Fugitive Task Force announced that Kevin Anthony Briggs was arrested in Portland on Friday night.

The 28-year-old Briggs was wanted for escaping from the Bozeman Police Department on Feb. 1 after being arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, attempted sexual intercourse without consent and assault on a peace officer. The FBI added a federal charge of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

The Billings Gazette reports that the search for Briggs spanned the Pacific Northwest as well as California.

Authorities say he was spotted about 6:45 p.m. Friday in a van and arrested without incident.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The FBI is asking the public to be on the lookout for a violent fugitive who may be headed to Mexico. Kevin Anthony Briggs, 28, escaped from police in Montana on February 1 and was last seen in San Francisco.

On February 1, Briggs was arrested in Montana for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting a woman there, as well as hitting the officer who took him into custody.

"He was taken to a detention center there and somehow was able to escape," FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth said.

Surveillance video of that escape shows Briggs simply walking out the front door. He was left alone in an interrogation room. According to the time code on the footage, police didn't realize he was gone until 10 minutes later, by which time it was too late.

"As late as last week, he was in San Francisco and we believe he's in Southern California on his way to get to Mexico," Foxworth said.

This isn't the first time Briggs has been in trouble with the law. At the time of this most recent arrest, he was on probation for a similar crime involving sexual assault and kidnapping. He's also a registered sex offender.

"We're not talking someone who's committing crimes against properties. These are violent crimes against a person and they're very violent in nature," Foxworth said.

Briggs was last seen in the San Francisco area. Law enforcement officials believe he may be staying in homeless shelters and working odd jobs to support his travels.

They're hoping his unique piercings and tattoos will help lead to his capture. Briggs has piercings in his ears, lower lip, and belly button. As for his tattoos, they consist of one under his armpit, his lower lip and a sunburst around his right nipple.

"What we want is we want to take this person off the street. He's been out there for too long already and we want to make sure before he commits other crimes, we prevent that," Foxworth said.
