Who let the dogs in?

Posted: Updated:

DEL MAR (CBS 8) - Every dog must have its day, and Bobo is hoping that today is his.

"Bo's a Pomeranian. He's 10 1/2 years old. He's been running agility for about 6 to 7 years. Hopefully, today, we'll get our championship," his owner Kathy Flessner said.

Bo's not alone in his quest for a ribbon at this weekend's Silver Bay Kennel Club Dog Show.

"We have 1,900 dogs entered. We have about 300 runs with the agility running all three days," Jan Hill said.

Bo's got lots of competition, most of it younger.

Even before the agility trials begin, the handlers do a strange looking synchronized ballet on the obstacle course. Jason Michael says it's just part of the ritual.

"What they do before the dogs run on is they walk on the course and they familiarize themselves with the order, the direction they have to turn and how they are going to direct the dog," Jason said.

Agility director Ken Miller will tell you this is a popular spectator's sport.

"Saturday and Sunday, we'll have five to six people deep on the outside of the rings," Ken said.

Not far away, the show dogs are going through some final primping and preening. They don't seem to mind it too much. They remain well behaved and almost oblivious to the painstaking grooming, even when they are aerosoled with perfume.

"A cocker spaniel is at least a good four hours. You've got the brushing. You've got the bathing, the blow drying," an owner said.

Meanwhile, back at the agility course, Bo and his owner are being put through their paces. The old guy comes through with a championship performance. There are rounds of applause and tears of joy.

"I've had so many years waiting for this. It's like 5 1/2 years that we've been trying to do this," Kathy said.

Dog and owner are both shaking.

"He's a good boy," Kathy said.

And he's got a big ribbon to prove it. Just the first dog lover's dream come true, a joyous celebration that will be repeated all weekend long at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Some of the footage used in this video report was shot using a GoPro camera.
