SAN DIEGO (CNS/CBS 8) - San Diego police Monday were looking for a motorist who fled the after striking and killing a 35-year-old man while he was walking his dog in Hillcrest.

The hit-and-run in the 1000 block of University Avenue near Vermont was reported at 7:06 p.m. Sunday, according to San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros.

The suspect drove a black pickup truck and fled eastbound without stopping at all, the officer said in a statement.

Sgt. Leonard Flake told CBS News 8 Monday the truck had '4x4' in red on the rear quarterpanels and likely has front-end damage. He added that two people were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The 35-year-old victim was not in a marked crosswalk, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. A 911 call was placed and emergency personnel responded to the scene.

He was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Steven Lawler and Chris Cook both work at nearby Flicks bar. They saw the aftermath as police blocked the street.

"I'm shocked that it would happen on this block. For someone to hit and run... it's a shock," Lawler said.

Investigators were looking into the possibility that a nearby business would have surveillance video of the hit-and-run.

The man's pet Chihuahua, named Mini, was not hurt. County officials said the man who was walking the dog was not actually her owner, who they were working to locate. Mini was adopted from a county shelter a couple of years ago.
