SOCHI, RUSSIA, Feb. 26, 2014 /CNW/ - It is with great anticipation and pride that the Canadian Paralympic Committee today announced the athletes, coaches and staff who will make up Team Canada at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, to be held March 7 to 16.

Canada will bring a total of 54 athletes to compete in all sports contested at the Sochi Paralympics: sledge hockey, wheelchair curling, para-alpine skiing, para-snowboard, para-Nordic skiing and biathlon. This total includes five guides for athletes with a visual impairment in para-Nordic and para-alpine skiing.

The Sochi 2014 Canadian Paralympic Team is led by Chef de Mission Ozzie Sawicki of Cochrane, Alta.

"It is fantastic to head to Sochi as the Chef de Mission of one of the strongest Canadian Paralympic Teams at any Paralympic Games in our winter history," said Sawicki. "After spending much of the lead up to the Games meeting with the sports in their training and competition settings, I know that our entire Canadian contingent is ready to take on the challenge to once again place in the top three nations in the gold medal count, as we did in Vancouver at our home Games in 2010."

Many have asked whether the Paralympic Games will be broadcast on television. The answer is a resounding yes! With 100 days to go to the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, on Nov. 27, the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) unveiled unprecedented, fully accessible broadcast and electronic media plans for the most comprehensive coverage ever offered in Canada for a Paralympic Games - more than 65 hours of broadcast, up to 350 hours of digital streaming, and rights-free news access highlights connecting Canadians via multi platforms.

CPC will lead the Paralympic Broadcast Consortium partners in creating coverage on five broadcast/digital platforms: CBC/Radio-Canada, Sportsnet, Accessible Media Inc. (AMI), Yahoo Sports Canada and SendtoNews.

The broadcast schedule will be posted shortly on paralympic.ca/sochi2014.
