Students get hands-on learning in STEM subjects

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - More than 300 San Diego-area students got a chance to race toy cars and operate robots Thursday, all in the name of education.

Students from 11 local schools participated in a STEM expo at the Scottish Rite Center. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The students competed in all types of project-based learning activities, including robotic exploration.

"We're helping these students learn the algebra and mathematics and physics in a way that makes sense to them, by owning businesses, owning teams, working on projects," Terri Stripling of Ten80 Education said.

Thursday's event was sponsored by Ten80, a national program aimed at cultivating STEM skills in kids.
