Man killed by accused drunk driver in stolen car

CHULA VISTA (CNS/CBS 8) - Police say a man accused of running down and killing a 44-year-old bicyclist in a stolen car told them he had been drinking before the crash.

Michael Reyes, 29, admitted he had been drinking prior to the collision at East J Street and Dennis Avenue that killed David Voigt of Chula Vista late Monday afternoon, according to Chula Vista police Lt. Lon Turner.

Shortly before 4:15 p.m., Reyes was driving a stolen silver Nissan Maxima westbound on East J Street when he suddenly crossed into oncoming traffic and struck Voigt as he was riding his bicycle, Turner said in a statement.

"I heard someone slam really hard," said a neighbor who didn't want to be identified.

The Maxima continued onto a sidewalk after striking Voigt, eventually coming to rest after striking an SDG&E power pole and a tree.

Paramedics took both Voigt and Reyes to UCSD Medical Center, where Voigt died and Reyes was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

"It's horrific circumstances, the bicyclist who was on his way home from work who had a wife and children, was killed," said Chula Vista police Sgt. Rusty Rea.

The Maxima was stolen out of National City earlier in the day, Turner said, adding that property found inside the vehicle appeared to also be stolen.

"We do believe he was involved in a theft four blocks away," said Rea. "What clued us in were some registration and paperwork and insurance papers belonging to a car up the street."

The neighbor says she had no idea the driver was a suspected drunken thief, "The driver laid on the street and he kept yelling, I didn't see his face and he kept yelling, 'I'm hurt, I'm hurt.'"

Police say Reyes was under the influence of alcohol.

"He admitted to officers first on the scene that he had been drinking," said Rea.

Officers say once Reyes recovers from his injuries he will be transferred to the San Diego County jail where he faces auto theft, stolen property and vehicular manslaughter charges.
