Mass rescue exercise underway in Mission Bay

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Lifeguards, police and Coast Guard crews took part Wednesday in a mass-rescue exercise involving a simulated boat collision in the ocean outside the entrance to Mission Bay Channel.

During the four-hour drill, which began in the late morning, the public safety personnel pulled about three dozen participants -- mostly lifeguards -- out of the water and tended to their mock injuries, ranging from minor to life-threatening, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

The training session also involved an onshore medical triage area, where medics practiced prioritizing treatment and dealing with relatives of accident victims.

The exercise was scheduled to continue Thursday, centering on simulated recovery of bodies by scuba diving teams, Swanson said.
