Young children taken into protective custody after being found alone

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Three children are in protective custody after they were found unsupervised at a home in the Mission Village neighborhood.

Police were called to the scene Thursday morning by a home inspector who was sent to the house as part of foreclosure proceedings.

He found the three girls, ages two, four and six, playing in the driveway. Police say the children told him they hadn't eaten in a day.

When officers went inside the home, they found the mother's female roommate along with needles and drug paraphernalia.

The mother eventually returned home. The children will remain in protective custody until authorities can determine they will be properly taken care of.
