Cane Patch Pies: A slice of the good life

Posted: Updated:

VISTA (CBS 8) - In an unadorned Vista kitchen, Tony Smalls carries on a South Carolina tradition passed down from his great grandmother to his mother.

"They taught me this when I was about 5 or 6 years old, eating these pies. I was taught how to make them too," Tony said.

Transplanted to San Diego, Tony now handcrafts a complete line of sweet potato desserts that he sells online and at various farmers markets from Otay Ranch to Hillcrest, Ocean Beach to Oak Park.

"This is the famous sweet potato pie. Straight from South Carolina, the treasured recipe," Tony said. "You won't find another like it."

Most of us have tried pumpkin pie, but sweet potato pie might be new to our palates. Many folks confuse sweet potatoes with yams.

"A sweet potato is more nutritious than a yam," Tony explained.

Cane Patch Pies has designed a whole line of sweet potato treats, like their sweet potato cinnamon rolls, fresh from the oven, just waiting to be frosted with a powdered sugar-based, real butter frosting. The smell is overwhelming. The taste even more intoxicating.

It's just one in a line of Cane Patch Pies' sweet potato-based menu.

"Biscuits, cupcakes and we also have vegan, gluten-free sweet potato cookies," Tony said.

Cane Patch Pies honors a family tradition, an authentic slice of South Carolina life.
