SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 8) - Fire crews worked to control a five-alarm blaze that broke out Tuesday at an apartment building under construction near AT&T Park in San Francisco.

The fire was reported just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, and was said to have reached five alarms by 5:50 p.m.

Black smoke could be seen from all over the Bay Area. There were reports that the fire may have also spread to more than one building.

THIS IS A STORY UPDATE. Read below for an earlier AP story.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A three-alarm fire is burning in San Francisco's China Basin neighborhood, sending a plume of black smoke high into the sky.

San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge says the fire, which began Tuesday afternoon, is ravaging a high-rise building on Fourth Street and is continuing to move down the block.

Talmadge says the building was under construction, which makes battling the blaze more difficult because the building's fire suppression systems had not yet been installed.

A three-alarm fire typically involves about 100 firefighters, Talmadge says.
