Woman wakes up to burglary suspect in Mira Mesa hot prowl

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) - San Diego police are looking for a prowler who broke into a Mira Mesa apartment and entered a bedroom with a mother and daughter sleeping inside.

The woman woke to find a strange, shirtless man standing in her apartment early Wednesday, but he fled before officers could arrive, police said.

The burglary at the West Star Apartments in the 10100 block of Black Mountain Road was reported at 12:45 a.m., according to San Diego police Sgt. David Jennings. The woman and her daughter were unharmed, he said.

Neighbor Tyler O'Harrow was heading to the store the first time he saw the man. Five minutes later when he came back, he saw him again. He told CBS News 8 he thought the man might have been a burglar, so he called 911. The man then climbed a wall and entered the apartment, where the woman and her child were.

Tyler says he only thought the guy was casing the complex to steal stuff, and didn't approach him because he didn't want to scare him off before police arrived. But he says if he had known the suspect was targeting women, he would have been a lot more aggressive.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic man in his 20s to early 30s. He stands around 5'5" with a medium build and short black hair with facial hair. He was last seen wearing a white tank top and jeans, possibly with a gold chain around his neck.

Kirra Long lives just a couple apartments over from where it happened. She told CBS News 8 she's not taking any chances in light of the incident.

"I always have pepper spray around the house... my phone always on me. You have to be careful no matter what," she said.
