SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - One man was shot to death Wednesday in what police are calling a ride-by shooting in City Heights.

The victim was killed by a person on a bicycle while sitting in an SUV at 41st Street and Orange Avenue. Someone called 911 around 6:11 a.m. saying several gunshots were heard in the area.

CBS News 8 has confirmed that the victim is Alberto Sanchez, according to his older brother.

Homicide detectives say a man riding a bicycle pulled up to a black Ford Explorer and shot several times at the 45-year-old man inside, striking him several times in the upper body.

Sanchez was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital, according to a San Diego fire-rescue dispatcher. He died a short time later.

"I heard at least five gunshots. I wasn't too worried. I stayed out of it, it's none of my business," said neighbor Dre Savage.

Since about 6 a.m., Orange Avenue was blocked off for hours between Marlborough and Central, which is not too far from Woodrow Wilson School, as police describe their suspect.

"A male in his 20's with a dark sweatshirt and blue jeans," said Lt. Michael Hastings with the Homicide Unit.

It's too early to tell if this is gang-related, but detectives are questioning a bicyclist who was in the area.

"We have one person of interest we're talking to at this time," add Lt. Hastings.

An autopsy is being done and police say it's too early to discuss a motive, but they believe neighbors are not in danger.
