CHULA VISTA (CNS) - An ex-con accused of stabbing his 21-year-old girlfriend in Chula Vista over her alleged infidelity pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of attempted murder.

Brandon Lee Mason, 29, was ordered held without bail.

Morris -- who prosecutors allege has been to prison three times -- faces 30 years behind bars if convicted.

He was arrested near the Vons grocery store on Eastlake Parkway about 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

Mason allegedly attacked his girlfriend while she showered in her apartment at 244 Palomar St. about 12:45 a.m. The defendant fled following the attack and neighbors rushed to the naked woman's aid after hearing her scream, according to authorities.

The woman said that just prior to the stabbing, she confessed to her boyfriend to being unfaithful, police said.

One of the neighbors who came to her aid, Leonardo Becerra, said he was a National Guard medic and used his emergency first-aid kit to help slow the woman's bleeding before paramedics arrived.

Morris will be back in court March 21 for a readiness conference and March 26 for a preliminary hearing.
