"Scarecrow Bandit" robs Carlsbad bank

Posted: Updated:

CARLSBAD (CNS) - Authorities were on the lookout Friday for a man who disguised his face by wearing a brown burlap sack with eye holes cut into it while robbing a Carlsbad bank.

The robber -- dubbed the "Scarecrow Bandit" because of his mask -- entered the Chase Bank branch office at 7176 Avenida Encinas around 6 p.m. Thursday, according to Carlsbad police and the FBI.

He demanded cash from a teller and fled on foot with an undisclosed amount, police said in a statement, adding no weapon was seen.

In addition to the unusual mask, the robber wore mirrored sunglasses, a gray hooded sweatshirt with stripes and tan cargo-style pants, police said.

He was described as white, in his mid to late 20s, 5 feet 8 with a medium athletic build.

No one was injured.
