Padres fans "swing for seats" competition

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Padres fans flocked to Petco Park Saturday to "Swing for your Seats." It was an opportunity for 1,000 lucky fans to try to hit a home run for season tickets.

"Everybody thinks that they can see our players do it in a pressure situation so this is their chance to prove that they have the opportunity to do it themselves," Padres senior VP of sales and services, Steven Ziff said.

Batters got two pitches and one swing but in order to win they had to hit the ball over the outfield fence.

One fan said he felt just like Padres player Carlos Quentin when he was up at bat.

"He looks out there and he squints his eyes and the ball comes in boom, although a foul ball is what happened to me, for him I imagine something sweeter," Corey Menotti said.

Apparently, not a single person hit a homerun Saturday, so no season tickets were given out. Organizers say this event is the first of its kind -- not only for the Padres but for any MLB team.
